Advocacy Toolkit

Do you live away?

If you live out of province, and care about NS Arts, Culture, and Heritage, you can still make your voice heard! Simply write a letter addressed to The Honourable Tim Houston, Premier of Nova Scotia that includes the importance of culture to your visiting the province and send it here: FinanceMinister@novascotia.ca, MIN_CCTH@novascotia.ca, PREMIER@novascotia.ca, advocacy@nsarts.ca

If you live in Nova Scotia

Step 1: Look at the talking points.

No one needs to be an expert to have their say. It is helpful when we are all using the same language and being careful to call them proposed cuts, and to focus on the benefits that Arts, Culture & Heritage bring to our economy, tourism, health and vibrancy.  We have given you some tools to use.

Step 2: Write a letter to your MLA

It is vital to be respectful and to copy the following on your email: Your MLA (find them here) The Honourable John Lohr, Minister of  Finance: FinanceMinister@novascotia.ca The Honourable Dave Ritcey, Minister of Communities, Culture, Tourism and Heritage: MIN_CCTH@novascotia.ca The Honourable Tim Houston, Premier of Nova Scotia:  PREMIER@novascotia.ca NS Arts coalition: advocacy@nsarts.ca

Please let us know here if you get a response!

Step 3: Call or Meet your MLA

To feel comfortable speaking to your MLA, and making the campaign positive and engaging, we have created an easy guide to help you feel confident. Here's a sample email or script to use to ask for a meeting or call if your MLA is in government. Please remember  to be respectful and ensure you talk about the ways NS can benefit from investment in culture:

Hello,

I hope you are well. I would like to meet as soon as possible for a couple of minutes to talk about the proposed catastrophic budget cuts  to the Arts, Culture and Heritage Sector, and to ask you to reverse that decision. I want to talk about  how arts and culture can be  part of  making  Nova Scotians and Nova Scotia strong, and what I believe the arts and culture sector needs in the upcoming budget.   I appreciate your time and look forward to seeing you soon.

Sincerely,
